Breitling Cosmonaute "Scott Carpenter" Reference 809

The race for prestige has resulted in many chronographs becoming iconic in the eyes of watch collectors. The Breitling Navitimer has made its mark as one of the celebrated utilitarian wristwatches. Among the most coveted models is the Breitling Cosmonaute "Scott Carpenter" Reference 809.

The nickname derives from the reference 809 being on the wrist of astronaut Scott Carpenter during his piloting of NASA’s Mercury-Atlas 7 flight of May 24, 1962. This mission made Carpenter the second American to orbit the Earth. Interestingly, this mission also allowed Breitling to become first Swiss wristwatch and chronograph to be worn in space. According to the astronaut, the 24-hour dial allowed for a much more straight-forward approach while keeping track of time during missions.

This particular model features an “all black” dial, with beautifully retained luminous Arabic hour markers. The case is strong, maintaining its original lines, and appears to be unpolished. The watch measures 41mm in diameter and is paired on a tan 22mm “Honey Wind” strap made by Nick Gabarro.
