John Mayer Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore “Volcano”

It’s no secret to passionate watch enthusiasts that John Mayer is among the most high profile collectors within the scene. His affinity for Audemars Piguet was highlighted within his second HODINKEE Talking Watches appearance showcasing a Royal Oak Extra-Thin Tourbillon, a Concept GMT Tourbillon in white ceramic, as well as a Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Chronograph Openworked Self-Winding model. Often Mayer can be seen wearing some of his most cherished timepieces while performing, and Audemars Piguet is among the most frequent brands to take the stage with the singer/guitarist.

Just over a decade back, Mayer performed at the 6th Annual Benefit Concert for Matt’s Promise,  a non-profit dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people affected by terminal illnesses. The performance occurred in Manhattan, New York in front of a crowd of close to 1,000 people.

To commemorate the performance and charitable cause, Mayer involved one of his favorite watchmakers to create a customized timepiece to be auctioned after he performed with it. The Royal Oak Offshore was specially made to evoke a scorching hot “Volcano” aesthetic. The watch has a  42mm in diameter and a thickness of 14.3mm. The watch is powered by the caliber 3126 (a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module). Post performance, the watch hammered just over $56,000 during the charitable auction. In addition to the watch, all proceeds generated from that special evening went directly towards the research of Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy (DMD).

The allure of musician’s watches is nothing foreign to those who are deeply obsessed. Performers such as Duke Ellington and his once missing Patek Philippe 1563, or Eric Clapton’s Universal Geneve Tri-Compax are just a few that pull the heartstrings of those in our community. Perhaps one day in the future, collectors will seek the whereabouts of timepieces that belonged to our generations’ rockstars. With that in mind, I am thrilled to be offering a timepiece with such a fantastic story.

The watch was recently sourced through the gentleman who won the 2011 auction. Along with its original AP box, it accompanies a letter from Matt’s Promise confirming its provenance and correspondence from AP confirming that the company’s Archives reflect that this serial number was for the charitable event.
