Wall Street Journal: Eric Wind quoted on watches with provenance

Katie Murphy recently wrote for The Wall Street Journal ‘Why Collecting Vintage Watches Took Off During the Pandemic’. Within the article, Murphy explores what makes watch collectors tick and is offered a perspective from Eric Wind on such models as the Rolex Air-Kings with Winne-Dixie and Domino’s Pizza dials. 

“People get excited by watches that the original owners didn’t buy but earned.”

However, in the instances where provenance is embellished by bad actors, Wind points to future alternatives that can help the authentication process.

“People have discussed bringing watches into the blockchain universe and then the true stories would be tied to the serial number forever.”

In regard to why vintage watch collecting has taken off, Wind states: “The demand for objects that tell time—vintage watches—has exploded even as our own sense of time has been distorted by the pandemic”
