Rolex “Paul Newman” “RCO” Daytona reference 6263
The “RCO” Daytona occupies a mythical and special place in the world of grail Rolex watches. Only a small number of them exist during the early run of serial numbers for the legendary Daytona reference 6263. Classified as a "Paul Newman" due to the exotic dials made by Singer with small boxes in the registers, the “RCO” is arguably the most desirable version of the Paul Newman Daytona that was made.
These “RCO” Daytonas have ROLEX and COSMOGRAPH above OYSTER, and are also known as the “Oyster Sotto” (or “Oyster Below”) and differ from the Paul Newman Panda reference 6263 that features ROLEX then OYSTER then COSMOGRAPH (or “ROC”) on the dial.
I first had the privilege of writing about this watch when it came to auction in 2014 at Kaplan’s in Sweden. Consigned by the family of the original owner, I decided to write about it on HODINKEE and call it “The Best Rolex Available This Month” surpassing even the best Rolex watches available at auction in Geneva. You can read my article about this watch here:
This version is a “Mark 1” RCO found in the 2.085 million serial number range. Personally, I have not seen a better RCO in terms of condition or provenance. It is a tremendous honor to be able to offer it to the market today.
In absolutely mint condition, the watch features its original “Mark 1” acrylic bezel. It also features the original rare Mark 0 screw-down pushers. It has a Rolex reference 7835 Swiss-made bracelet with rare 271 end links.
This watch is from circa 1969 (2.085 million case serial number), does not have the original box or papers, has a manual-wind movement (Caliber 727 made by Valjoux), and has a 37.5mm diameter bezel and a 36.1mm diameter case.
You can read more about it our offering the watch here in Robb Report and HODINKEE:
