Benrus Wrist Alarm
While the alarm watch discussion predominantly surrounds the celebrated Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox and Vulcain Cricket, there are hundreds of fantastic models and manufacturers that don’t generate the same amount of buzz. Fortunately for those in the know, these undervalued watches can allow one to enter the collecting scene breaking the bank.
Typically, the best bargain buys can be found in watches powered by A. Schild SA. Brands such as Wakmann, Tissot, Enicar, Helbros, Tudor - and even the pioneer Vulcain - would utilize the formidable calibre AS 1475. It was one of the most widely used alarm movements that would serve as a cost-effective alternative for the brands who wanted to make noise in the alarm watch market. As far as this AS 1475 is concerned, the volume is more even toned and lower compared to the higher pitched alarms from JLC and Vulcain. In a sense, these may be a bit more ideal for personal reminders in the office setting or while in the company of others.
The stainless steel case has been taken care of over its life maintaining a mirror polished surface and profile. While the case dimensions are 34mm wide, the watch wears quite modern on the wrist at 41mm lug-to-lug. With an 18mm lug width, the watch will be a fantastic entry to vintage watches for the collector who is eager to get the most value by switching up strap styles.
The watch bears signed dual crowns which serve to independently operate the movement and alarm. The top crown located at 2 o'clock will power the alarm when it is closed by winding clockwise. While opened, it can be set by rotating the crown counterclockwise. The second crown located at 4 o’clock will power the movement when closed. When opened it will function to set the time. One advantage this Benrus’ movement will have over many of its predecessors (such as the Vulcain calibre 120) is its ability to set the time both forward and backward.
The dial is ornamented with applied-elongated numerals 3, 6, 9 and 12. The applied numerals are stylishly emphasized by slightly smaller remaining numerals which are painted onto the dial in black. The dial’s silver sunburst finish projects 360 degrees towards the exterior of the dial, with a slightly darker complexion in the center deriving from the luminous hands. While the patina has not developed in a symmetrical manner, those who love the natural imperfections will see this as a charming, and ultimately unique characteristic of the Benrus Wrist Alarm.
