Watch Spotting at Sid Mashburn Atlanta
Words and Photos by Charlie Dunne
After some early morning flight cancelation and rebooking drama, we arrived in Atlanta and were greeted at the airport by our trusty friend Max Braun (@mrbwatches). Braun played an integral role in planting the seed for a Wind Vintage and Sid Mashburn pop-up event. “I love Sid Mashburn’s clothing. If I’m in any of the cities where they have a store, there is no way I would shop anywhere else” Braun would emphasize in the car. “In addition to the great style and quality, the company culture is a big factor why people love to wear their clothing”. Eric would recall his first time meeting Sid in person. “When Sid and I greeted each other, Sid said ‘You’re Eric Wind. You’re a big deal!’ This prompted my response: ‘You’re Sid Mashburn! You’re a way bigger deal!’” Sid is most certainly a watch guy in addition to having great style. He wears an Explorer reference 1016, a watch that Wind has often cited as being a candidate for the perfect one-watch collection. During that first encounter Mashburn noticed Eric’s wife Christine was wearing a gold Rolex Daytona reference 116528. “Sid asked Christine if it was her daily watch and she said it was. Sid then replied, ‘Good. A Tuesday needs that watch!’”
We arrived an hour early to set up and we were greeted by the incredible staff who showed us a warm welcome and great enthusiasm as we began to unpack the vintage watches. We passed our dapper new friends Datejusts, a vintage Junghans designed by Max Bill, and a rose gold Patek Philippe reference 3940 to complement their incredible suits.
The event had a fantastic turnout with dozens of local watch collectors and a number of Sid Mashburn clients joining the party. In attendance were several friends: legendary collector/scholar Jeff Stein (founder of OnTheDash) arrived wearing his Belgian Air Force Carrera paired with a Sid Mashburn sports shirt. Chris Singerman came out in full support of WV by double wristing a limited edition HODINKEE Skipper - which we had the honor of selling him last year - along with his Rowing Blazers x Seiko. My uncle Richard Dunne wore his vintage Rolex Air-King Date reference 5700 (Dibs!) and I would come to find out he had instantly become best friends with Sid Mashburn. Brandon Baker had an incredibly stylish ensemble complemented by his family heirloom OMEGA Seamaster. We had a blast meeting up with Lee and Rachel Perlis, Drew Zucker, Nick Mcferren, Keith Mitchell (who showed his golf clubs and rare Golf Pride grips to Eric), @watchumor, and dozens more. While incredibly sophisticated, Mashburn also carried himself as a southern gentleman - a fun-loving individual who was extremely humble, approachable and charismatic. An hour into the event, Wind echoed this impression of him stating to a group of us: “Sid Mashburn has been a hero of mine for years, but I never had the chance to meet him until late 2022 at a Mr Porter dinner in Miami. They say never meet your heroes, but you can always meet Sid!”
The experience was a night to remember, and we were able to get some wonderful photos of what our friends wore on their wrists. Hopefully, this will be the first of many Wind Vintage events with Sid Mashburn!
