Rolex Paul Newman Black Dial Daytona Reference 6239

Among all vintage Rolex watches, Daytona chronographs with “exotic” dials meant for improved legibility during racing are arguably the most well-known and desirable. Nicknamed “Paul Newman” Daytonas after the legendary actor who wore a reference 6239 with white dial for many years, these transcend the world of watches and enter the rarified air of iconic objects. Paul Newman’s own Daytona sold for $17.8 million at auction in New York City in 2018 and remains the most expensive wristwatch ever sold.

This is a rare and extremely beautiful Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona reference 6239 black dial example. I would rate it among the most attractive examples I have seen with a black dial. I understand that a previous owner placed the dial and hands into this case from an inferior case, but is in the correct serial range. and essentially no one would ever know that except for this disclosure. The serial number is 2.00M dating to circa 1969. The central seconds hand appears to be replaced as it has a longer triangular head than the earlier examples. The case has been lightly polished, but is extremely attractive. It measures 37mm in diameter. The bezel is correct for this reference and original. It is paired on a C&I rivet bracelet made for Rolex for the American market dating to 1973.

The watch does not come with box and papers. We do not know the service history, but it is running well. It recently passed a water resistance test of 3 bar. It features a new TrueDome D21 crystal that is gorgeous.

Overall, this is one of the most gorgeous Rolex Paul Newman Daytonas with black dials that we have ever held and a special opportunity for astute collectors.
